About

The International Virtual Summer Camp 2022 is organized by the Department of Communication Studies at Hong Kong Baptist University. Being held online between the 28th and the 31st of July, this one-of-a-kind inter-university online event brings together international experts who will share their professional insights and the best practices for strategic communication in growing new areas, such as the metaverse, web 3.0, NFT as a media, electronic sports and more.

Students from various locations will apply the knowledge and skills by collaborating and competing with their counterparts in different regions. They will be assigned to teams to work on a client brief and develop a strategic communication solution in 48 hours. They will present their creative ideas and receive feedback from international experts. The winning teams or individuals will receive cash prizes of up to $1,000 USD.

Holly joined Sinclair as a new graduate in 2012 and has successfully shown her savvy moving up the career ladder to a leadership position. Her skills and years of agency experience have seen her take lead across sector, working with B2B and B2C brands in the travel and tourism, lifestyle, consumer goods, luxury, and culture sectors. Kevin Chu is the Co-founder of Capsule Vault NFT Team. He was a Design Strategist at NASA Development of LEO (Low Earth Orbit) Economy Joint Project (2021) and a Big Data Analyst Team for Domino Taiwan (2021).

His sharing will focus on the design strategies for connecting NFT to brand management. By sharing his previous project on strategic communication of a social experiment, Absurd Arboretum, participants can gain rich insights on identifying potential areas and creating values for NFT.

Prashant Galani is Head of Digital Marketing in Asia Pacific for Cigna. He has over a decade of experience in the field and enjoys the dynamism of it and all its learning opportunities. He believes that communicating through digital channels is the most efficient way in reaching a desired audience. A cute video can make people love your brand within minutes and a crisis can kill your brand within seconds. Therefore, we need to be extra cautious and strategic on how we use this digital space.

His sharing will provide insights into how corporate companies can rebuild trust with their audience and offer a factual-based communication environment amidst the boom of fake news, especially with the devastating impact of disinformation during COVID-19.

JC Ko received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from National Taiwan University (NTU), and then received a postdoctoral fellowship from the National Science Council to work as a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute of Keio Media Design (KMD) at Keio University in Japan, and then studied in the GSP2014 Program at SingularityU in Silicon Valley. In 2015, he co-developed the 360VR camera LUNA project invested by HTC VIVEX Investment. In 2017, he started to actively participate in blockchain industry promotion and related projects development, assisting many enterprises to explore blockchain system, digital collectibles (NFT) distribution, crypto games, smart contracts and other projects. He has been verified as creators and collectors on many platforms such as MakersPlace, OpenSea, Rarible, KnownOrigin and Foundation, also as Binance NFTs first 100 Creators. He is now hosting a Top#1 Technology podcast show in Taiwan, “dAAAb in Tech", and continues to actively participate in the development of the Metaverse, with virtual Taiwan built-in.

His talk will focus on the opportunities provided by the metaverse and blockchain technologies for marketing communication.

James Lee is the founder and CEO of MomentX, a social metaverse combining the best of both Virtual Reality and blockchain technology. MomentX not only supports multi-chain applications but also is one of a select few VR-first metaverses, optimized for the Meta Quest (formerly known as Facebook Oculus Quest) platform which has the largest market share so that everyone can bask in the fascination of digital assets and realize the metaverse is not simply a pigment of their imagination. It enables creators by providing powerful tools that don’t require coding skills to activate. James started investing in virtual reality back in 2015. He has led a team generating over 200 VR instances and collaborated with well-known brands. He is one of the founders of TAVAR - the Taiwan Association for Virtual and Augmented Reality.
James' talk will focus on the opportunities for brands in the metaverse to engage with the audiences, highlighting the myriad of opportunities brands have compared to offline gaming. His talk will also touch on the role of NFTs and blockchain technologies as part of the communication process.

Gregory then joined LeadBest, he assisted the company in entering South East Asia and helped client Acer Philippines become the market leader in the eSports industry. EchoX has won the best product experience, best product innovation and the jury’s prize of the 2020 Future Commerce award.

Yolanda is Committed to turning brand vision into intriguing narration at work. She is also a yogi, drummer, translator, photographer, and cheongsam advocate outside the office.

Ross is an award-winning academic, author and communication expert. He started his working life as a reporter in regional Australia before working in senior communication roles at BHP and Optus. He is a former CEO of the Australian Mobile Telecommunications Association. Now an academic at Deakin University, Ross teaches, researches and consults in the fields of communication, social media and emergency communication. He has worked with a range of commercial and government organisations, including Victorian, NSW and Queensland Government Departments, and the Australia Defence Force.

Adina has over 10 years of experience in global advertising agencies: leading teams, managing relationships and delivering award-winning integrated campaigns for brave brands that cut through the clutter. Her previous experience includes Health Insurance (Cigna International), Travel (Cathay Pacific Airways), Telecom (Vodafone), Tobacco (BAT & JTI brands) and Automotive (Goodyear).

With more than 20 years of integrated marketing communications experience across the Asia Pacific, Delicia is a Senior Client Strategist for key regional and global clients. She currently serves as the global client leader for the Singapore Tourism Board and Tencent, anchoring their international and domestic communications efforts. She is also Edelman’s APAC Chair for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.

She was previously the Managing Director of Client Innovation and Growth at Edelman Singapore, leading the 50-strong Reputation Practice. She has also led some of the firm’s largest global client relationships, serving as the Regional Client Relationship Manager for Samsung and GE, with a focus on Reputation Management and Consumer Engagement. She also spent three years as a Practice Leader at Edelman Beijing. There she directed Corporate Reputation, Consumer Engagement and issues mitigation initiatives for large global clients.

Delicia started her public relations career at the Singapore Tourism Board, building marketing communications campaigns in support of the Board’s economic objectives. Prior to joining STB, Delicia was with Singapore Health Services, where she drove branding and marketing efforts as well as Crisis Communications during the SARS outbreak. Delicia also spent three years honing her storytelling skills producing digital lifestyle news content for Singapore’s national newspaper, The Straits Times.

Based on the latest Edelman’s Trust Barometer 2022, Delicia will provide insights on how companies should establish their societal leadership while facing the decline of public trust.

Adrian joined DDB in 2015 and has since led strategic thinking on both local and regional enterprises. He was promoted to Head of Strategy in 2022, and co-leads DDB Hong Kong’s FTW unit, a global sub-brand of DDB that specializes in marketing in the e-sports and gaming arenas.

Born and bred in Hong Kong, Adrian was educated in the U.S. and has a BA in Political Science from the University of Wisconsin – Madison. His interests are eclectic and diverse, ranging from mixed martial arts to de-fi, from gaming to behavioural economics.

Mr. Yang Yi is the COO and the founder of JustPod, one of the first podcast production companies in China. He is also the host of GoLive (《去現場》) and the co-host LeftRight (《忽左忽右》). He used to be a managing editor of Yicai (第一財經電視). JustPod mananges over 15 Chinese podcast programs and provides services of corporate podcast production.

His sharing will shed light on the development of corporate thought leadership through audio communication means. Also, he will pinpoint the opportunities and risks of employing KOLs in this process while outlining the differences in KOL usage between western countries and China.

Dr. Xinzhi Zhang is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Interactive Media at Hong Kong Baptist University. His research focuses on comparative political communication, digital journalism, health communication, and digital humanities, using computational methods, online experiments, and comparative social surveys. His work has appeared in top-tier journals such as Social Science Computer Review, Computers in Human Behavior, Health Communication, Digital Journalism, International Journal of Communication, Policy & Internet, and Journalism. He was awarded two competitive research grants under the General Research Fund (GRF) from the Research Grants Council (RGC) of the Hong Kong SAR (in 2019 and 2020, respectively). He was also awarded a grant from the Public Policy Research Funding Scheme (PPR) from the Policy Innovation and Co-ordination Office (PICO) of the Hong Kong Government (2021). He serves as the Editorial Board Member of Digital Journalism, a high-impact journal in digital journalism studies and computational social science and interactive media research. He is the recipient of HKBU’s Performance Award as Young Researcher in 2021.

He is the Programme Director of MSc in AI and Digital Media (2019 - present). He has served as one of the founding members—and later the Programme Director—of the Data and Media Communication Concentration (2017 - 2019).

His talk will introduce several cutting-edge AI and interactive media applications for public communication. It focuses on significant research design and analytical approaches to understand people’s attitudes and communication behaviours on digital media during public communication campaigns. It reviews the advantages and pitfalls in the pipeline of digital data collection, processing, and analysis. Finally, the talk introduces computational methods for communication decision-making and storytelling.
